What is Banding?

Banding is a procedure that involves the placement of a tight band around a specific area of tissue to cut off its blood supply. Banding is commonly used for treating hemorrhoids and esophageal varices, among other conditions.

Our Banding Services

1. Hemorrhoidal Banding:
   Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectal or anal area that can cause discomfort, bleeding, and pain. Hemorrhoidal banding, also known as rubber band ligation, is an effective treatment for internal hemorrhoids. During this procedure, a small rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. Over time, the hemorrhoid shrinks, hardens, and eventually falls off. This method is minimally invasive and typically performed on an outpatient basis.

2. Esophageal Variceal Banding:
   Esophageal varices are enlarged veins in the esophagus that can bleed severely, often as a result of liver disease. Band ligation of esophageal varices involves placing bands around the enlarged veins to stop bleeding and prevent future complications. This procedure is usually performed during an upper endoscopy. The bands reduce the pressure in the varices and promote healing, significantly lowering the risk of hemorrhage.

The Banding Procedure

1. Preparation:
   For hemorrhoidal banding, there is generally no special preparation required, although some patients may need to follow specific pre-procedure instructions provided by our team. For esophageal variceal banding, preparation typically involves fasting before the procedure.

2. Procedure:
   Both types of banding are performed using specialized instruments. Hemorrhoidal banding is done in the clinic using a small, flexible tool to place the band around the hemorrhoid. Esophageal variceal banding is performed during an upper endoscopy, where an endoscope is inserted through the mouth to reach the esophagus and apply the bands to the varices.

3. Post-Procedure Care:
   After the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications. We will provide you with specific post-procedure care instructions and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
