UGI Bleed

At Dixit Clinic and Gastro Centre, we offer advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services tailored to address UGI bleeding with the highest level of care.

Diagnosis of UGI Bleeding

Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment of UGI bleeding. Our comprehensive diagnostic approach includes:

  • Clinical Assessment: Our process begins with a thorough evaluation of your medical history and symptoms. We discuss the nature of your symptoms, such as the presence of hematemesis (vomiting blood) or melena (black, tarry stools), and assess any underlying health conditions that may contribute to bleeding.

  • Endoscopy: Upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD) is a primary diagnostic tool for UGI bleeding. During this procedure, a flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth and advanced into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This allows our gastroenterologists to visually inspect the upper digestive tract, identify sources of bleeding, and potentially perform therapeutic interventions such as cauterization or clipping.

  • Imaging Studies: In cases where endoscopy is not sufficient or feasible, imaging studies such as CT scans can provide detailed images of the upper gastrointestinal tract. This helps to identify bleeding sources, assess the extent of bleeding, and detect any associated complications.

  • Laboratory Tests: Blood tests are crucial for evaluating the severity of bleeding and assessing overall health. Tests include a complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia and other indicators of blood loss, as well as liver function tests and coagulation profiles to assess underlying conditions that might contribute to bleeding.

Treatment Options for UGI Bleeding

Once the source of UGI bleeding is identified, treatment is tailored to the underlying cause and severity of the condition:

  • Endoscopic Therapy: Many cases of UGI bleeding can be managed during endoscopy. Procedures such as cauterization, clipping, or banding are used to control and stop the bleeding. Endoscopy also allows for the direct treatment of bleeding ulcers or varices.

  • Medications: Pharmacological treatment may include medications to reduce stomach acid, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 receptor antagonists. If bleeding is related to conditions like peptic ulcers or variceal hemorrhage, specific medications may be prescribed to address the underlying cause and prevent further bleeding.

  • Surgical Intervention: In severe cases where bleeding cannot be controlled through endoscopy or medication, surgical options may be considered. Surgical procedures may involve repairing damaged blood vessels or removing affected sections of the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Supportive Care: Managing UGI bleeding often requires supportive care to address symptoms and promote recovery. This includes intravenous fluids to replace lost blood and electrolytes, as well as nutritional support to aid in healing.
